Collection

5 mL blood in BLUE TOP (Sodium citrate) tube

Collect specimen between 8 a.m. and 12 noon. Expedite transport to the laboratory.

Handling Instructions

Outside Laboratories:

Centrifuge sample for 10 minutes and remove plasma.
Centrifuge plasma for another 10 minutes.
Transfer 1.5 mL platelet-poor plasma (1 mL minimum) to a separate plastic vial and freeze at -20°C to -80°C.
Send frozen on dry ice.

Stability: Frozen (Critical Frozen): 2 months; Refrigerated: Unacceptable; Ambient: Unacceptable.

Unacceptable Conditions: Serum, EDTA plasma, clotted or hemolyzed specimens.

Quantity

Requested: 1.5 mL platelet poor plasma
Minimum: 1.0 mL platelet poor plasma

Receiving Instructions: UW-MT & HMC Instructions: Forward specimen to Coag bench for processing.

Coagulation bench: Within 1 hour of draw, double-centrifuge sample and transfer 1.5 mL (1 mL min.) platelet-poor plasma to a separate plastic vial. Freeze plasma at -20°C (Sendouts frozen rack).
