Description: The Hexagonal Phase Phospholipid assay (HEXLA) is designed for the qualitative detection of Lupus Anticoagulant (LA) in plasma using hexagonal phase phospholipid and LA sensitive APTT reagent. This HEXLA assay is an integrated (screen and confirm) assay for detection of Lupus Anticoagulant. The delta correction of equal to or greater than 6 seconds is determined to be positive for Lupus Inhibitor.

NOTE: This test is performed as part of Lupus Anticoagulant Reflex Panel (LUPI2). HEXLA may be ordered by laboratory staff only.

Interferences and Limitations

This assay is insensitive to heparin levels up to 2 IU/mL. Dabigatran, direct factor Xa inhibitors (rivaroxaban, apixaban), fondaparinux and warfarin do not interfere with the interpretation of this assay. C-reactive protein/acute phase response does not interfere with the interpretation of this assay.

Ordering & Collection

Specimen Type: Blood
Collection: 3 or 5 mL BLUE TOP Tube
Handling Instructions: Laboratory must process the blue top tubes, within 4 hours of blood collection.
Quantity: Requested: Whole Blue top tube
Minimum: 1.0 mL plasma

Processing

Receiving Instructions: UW-MT: Take Blue top to UW-MT Coag lab for processing. Coag tech will freeze plasma sample for transport to HMC Coag.

HMC: Take Blue top to HMC Coag lab for processing.

Outside Laboratory: Centrifuge Blue tops for 10 minutes, remove plasma & respin plasma for another 10 minutes. Decant and Freeze plasma (minimum 1.0 mL) at -20°C to -80°C. Ship frozen on dry ice.
